Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park
Hernando county is the perfect location for every travel budget. It’s in close proximity to Tampa International Airport, Clearwater Beach, and an hour from Orlando. You have the option to hit the big parks, famous beaches, or explore the areas that are mere miles from where you might be visiting. The unnerved traveler is visiting family in Weeki Wachee Springs, since she really isn’t familiar with the area, doesn’t want to spend a lot of money, but desires a bit of tranquility at a low cost, a close option based on her location would be Pine Island. Let’s check it out!
Head down US Highway 19 from your current location and turn right when you see the mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, this would have been the closest option but the park is closed for renovations. Parking at Pine Island is 5 dollars, the park opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Make sure you have packed your beach chairs and bug spray. You have the option to sit at the tables, walk the small pier or find a palm tree to sit under in the sand. The cafe has hot snacks and the bathroom is very clean with hot water to clean up and stay sanitized. The tide in this location is very calm, great for non swimmers as well because the water is knee deep a good distance from the sand.
If you have a fear of birds, this might be a problem for you, pine island seems to be a sanctuary of sorts, they congregate by the hundreds and nest near the rocks. The sound is quite remarkable but as they are comfortable near humans, they have no fear flying over in an attempt to steal your food. Please use caution in the areas where signs are posted for snakes and gators, better yet, avoid them all together. But do keep a look in the waters for dolphins, most days you can see a few glide by……
