Slave Square

First things first, grab a map of the grounds at the gift shop. The cemetery sits on 48 acres of land and holds some 70,000 souls. If you are anything like me, you will find reading the information on the graves most interesting, but knowing who is buried where is just as important if you are pressed for time.

I started at the African American Grounds. I was fascinated at the number of graves that included the words “former slave” among many of the most notable names in Atlanta’s history. Take note of the sections that offer the audio cell tour, they provide descriptive detail about the person numbered at that grave.
