The name is a perfect fit for the illusion. Look closely, yes you do see a teddy bear, something cute and cuddly worth touching. And just like a teddy bear is a wild animal and not a pet, the teddy bear cholla cactus should not be touched. It’s covered with thick spikes that change colors from light to dark at the bottom as they age. As beautiful as they are, proceed with caution, the same as you would in a new relationship. Everything that looks cute and cuddly from afar shouldn’t be touched or you risk feeling the pain of spikes. The desert is filled with beauty, but it’s unrelenting. The heat into the hundreds, cactus that can kill, yet the environment survives and thrives.
